About

According to the United Nations, a refugee is a person who flees their home country due to a “well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.” There are an estimated 11-12 million refugees in the world today.  Women and girls constitute close to 80% of internally displaced refugees worldwide.

Womens health concerns include, malnutrition, pregnance, delivery, lactation, sexual violence, sexually transmitted diseases and mental health. While children’s health concerns include malnutrition, physical injury, infectious disease, family separation and mental health.

UNHCR and other refugee organizations have and are still working towards looking for ways to overcome the many health challenges that are faced by refugees.

I watched the movie “Hotel Rawanda” it was so interesting and heart breaking to see so many people suffer. When I saw the refugees camps this is what came to mind “health is not a priority there.” It isn’t however it should be but when your have lost everything it makes sense that it wouldn’t be. Women are constantly raped in this camps and many have STD’s as well as unwanted pregnancies. So much suffering thank you for helping us become more aware.
